Lunar Eclipse December 31 2009

Hi,

Thanks to the cold night and clear skies I managed to get a few shots of the lunar eclipse.  This one was taken at 19:22 when the eclipse was at its most prominent.

Torc to recover

Hi,
After the madness of last night, I decided to visit one of my favourite places today, Torc Waterfall in Killarney.  It was a beautiful day and the waterfall was in full flow so I had a great time trying to get some good shots of it.
Having a nice day to photograph the beautiful landscape of Kerry has been such a rarity this year that I had to jump at the chance.

What a night!

Hi,

Very busy last night photographing the debs dance for the leaving certificate pupils of Causeway Comprehensive School, County Kerry, many the happy day I had there myself.   The dance was held in Ballyroe Heights Hotel near Tralee and a great night was had by all.  I can only begin to imagine what time they finished at.......
A dazzling array of beautiful girls and well groomed young men all in high spirits and ready to begin the rest of their lives with style.
Many thanks to the pupils for selecting me and to my good friends Ann and Ger for the wonderful help they gave me on the night.  I will have the pleasure of photographing their wedding in July 2010 :-)
Busy weekend ahead to sort and edit all the photographs and get them ready for printing.
Best of luck to the pupils in their future lives.

Kilmore Co. Kerry

Hi,
I took this in the very late evening at Kilmore Strand near Ballyduff, Co. Kerry. The sun was long gone but there was a nice glow in the sky that I tried to capture. This is a blend of 2 long exposure (>3 minutes) shots taken with a Nikon D300, 17-55 f2.8 lens and a B & W 1000x Neutral Density filter.

iPhone 3.0 Software Update

Hi,
On the 17th of June, Apple released the much anticipated iPhone Version 3.0 software. At last the iPhone has the features that were so badly missed.
MMS messaging.
Cut, copy and paste,
SMS forwarding.
Of course they also launch the iPhone 3Gs, which is tempting. Hope I get an upgrade soon.

Apple Mac Pro

Hi,

I took delivery on Monday of a shiny Apple Mac Pro Quad Core. Last year I purchased a MacBook Pro to see how it would compare to my XP based systems. I was very impressed with the MacBook, hence the new purchase. Initial setup has been exceptionally easy. Switched it on, entered the usual registration information and it immediately picked up my wireless network, asked if I wanted to connect and I was on the net.
One of the main differences with both Macs over my XP machines is the level of heat generated. My old laptop would go into meltdown when pushed hard with Photoshop or Lightroom, whereas the MacBook stays cool and very rarely will the fans become audible. Similarly, the Mac Pro runs quietly and coolly when being pushed. My XP workstation has been heating the upstairs of my house for the last 2 years, noisy and with 4 fans running constantly.
Upgrading the Mac Pro is also very easy. Open one latch at the back, the side comes away and the drive bays are exposed. There is room for 4 hard drives and they are held in individual drive caddies which are facing you when the side is removed. Remove the empty caddy, sit it on the hard drive, secure 4 screws and slot it back in. I purchased 2 Western Digital 1TB drives and fitted them in under 5 minutes. Switched on the Mac Pro, it recognised the drives and asked me to initialise them. Both drives partitioned and running 10 mins later. I use one as main storage and the other as a backup drive. I connected the WD Studio Edition external drive as an additional backup option.

Listowel Bridge

As I was driving through Listowel last night the river was really still with good reflections and ready to be photographed. This is a HDR image consisting of 5 exposure blended in Photomatix and finished with Photoshop.

Why I Love My iPhone 3G

Hi,

I have my iPhone for 8 months and here's what I love:-
  • Internet access.
  • Email facilities.
  • Ability to post direct to this blog.
  • Applications.
  • iPod.
What I dont like:-
  • No copy and paste.
  • Cant forward texts.
  • No MMS.

The forthcoming software update to version 3.0 will address my hates. It should then be the perfect mobile companion.

WD MyBook Studio Edition II Arrival

Hi,

The Western Digital MyBook Studio Edition II arrived today. As I type it is in the middle of its first backup of my photographs. Had some initial difficulty getting the drive recognised with my Windows XP 64Bit operating system but all seems to be well now. I have it connected using Firewire 400 and the speed seems reasonable. I intend to connect using an eSATA connection but I am awaiting the cable from a seller on eBay. My setup is RAID 1 which means that the data will be copied to each 1TB disc in the unit thereby giving me 2 copies of all data. In the event of a single drive failure I would still have a full copy of my data available.

Western Digital MyBook Studio Edition II Hard Drive

Hi,
I have used 3 external hard drives for the past few years to ensure that all my documents and photographs are securely backed up and available into the future. Two nights ago I received the message from my backup software that my discs are full. I have decided to purchase Western Digital MyBook Studio Edition II external hard drive with a total capacity of 2TB. The unit consists of 2 x 1TB hard drives and when used in RAID 0 configuration it delivers 2TB of 'striped' storage. I will use the drive in RAID 1 whereby I will have 2 x 1TB discs with each drive being a 'mirror' image of the other. Hopefully, I will have the drive by the weekend and should be in a position to post further details on it by then.
